CAMERA USE WEEK 2:
VANTAGE POINT, FORE/MID/BACKGROUND
Exercise 1
Take some low angle portraits with a wide DOF
 |
f/25 1/40 ISO 200
Raemon is my subject and this is a low angle shot as I am looking up taking this photo. This is a wide DOF as I have a background in focus. My ISO should be 100 I should of checked it. |
 |
f/3.5 1/200 ISO 100
My image appears slightly blurred that would be me with hand shake ? Or my lens as it doesn't auto focus and I forget to check that. This was suppose to be a low angle portrait but its not. Had I thought this out better I should of had Tatiana standing on the concrete middle stage in the centre or a bench seat and then taken the shot, then I would of been looking up at her taking the low vantage shot. Also the fstop does not suggest a wide DOF I do have background but its not in very clear detail , that could be because I didn't focus my lens or totally an incorrect setup for this exercise.
|
 |
| f/9 /125 ISO 100 |
This is an image that I think gets it right. I am taking a low vantage shot as I am shooting up , I have a wide DOF as the sky, trees and the building are all in focus as far as I can see. My settings are correct. The shutter speed perhaps could of been set lower even tho she was walking and her wings were flapping .
 |
f/4 1/60 ISO 400
This image is slightly out of focus as it seems most of my shots are I think it might be my camera lens not working correctly and of course perhaps hand shake. Anyway my image was a low vantage shot and a wide DOF the aperture setting perhaps does not suggest that but my intentions were to get a wide DOF. I think this image is more of a narrow DOF as The background is slightly out of focus and as you come down to the mid ground is better and the foreground is great. This could of been a great example of the foreground/ mid/ back ground had it been in focus. |
 |
f/29 1/8 ISO 100
This is a better example of a low angle portrait with a wide DOF. Still out of focus but I have got the concept right I hope ! Im looking up taking the shot I have sky as my background the hill mid ground and Damion my foreground. |
EXERCISE 2
HIGH ANGLE PORTRAITS WITH A NARROW DEPTH OF FIELD
 |
f/25 1/13 ISO 100
Ok once again the right idea but the fstop certainly wouldn't suggest so. I have the background in focus as well which should be slightly blurred. It should have been f/5.6 or less. I can see I am not checking my settings . I am standing on the rock so my subject is below me giving me the high vantage point. Also my shutter speed should have been around 60 - 80 as I am hand holding the camera. . So this is not a narrow DOF but I am not going to remove the image as I want to leave my mistakes up and recognise them. |
 |
f/7.1 1/2,000 ISO 400
Ok we have some terrible settings going on here. Gee I just have to focus more and look at my cameras settings before I take my shots.. But I have got the image right , Tamati is totally in focus and the background isn't. I have a high vantage point , background is Kyles arm , the mid ground is a bag and the foreground is Tamati. The shutter speed is way to high should of been around 1/125 as Tamati was moving , and the ISO should have been set at 100 as I was at the beach. |
 |
f/8 1/320 ISO 100
These settings are much better I took time to check them. Victoria is is looking up at me , Im at a high vantage point . There isn't any blur in this image |
 |
f/9 1/125 ISO 100
Narrow DOF shot , we are slightly out of focus in the background but really not much for a good example of narrow DOF. Should be a lot more blur. High vantage only just, the camera isn't positioned that much higher than the subjects. We have the kids as our foreground, mid ground is the bench and the background is the hedge. Im really starting to understanding the difference in narrow DOF and wide depth of field. |
 |
f/1.8 1/25 ISO 800
I like this shot but Victoria is slightly out of focus perhaps because of hand shake or the shutter speed wasn't correct, it could of been set at 1/60 but it is a high vantage shot with a narrow DOF . ISO is 800 because it was a night shot. |
EXERCISE 3
Take some portrait photos in which the subject is in the mid ground. Compose the shot so there are elements in the foreground and also the background. Use a large F stop to allow for a wide DOF
 |
f/11 1/1000 ISO 100
Wide DOF Tamati is running around in my foreground, Kyle in the mid ground and the hill is the background. Perhaps it might have been better to have left Kyle out and used the rock as the mid ground with the hill as the background.
|
 |
f/32 1/15 ISO 100
Wide DOF Background in focus. I should of placed Damion much closer to me because there really doesn't look like a separation . I could have arranged this shot much better placing Damion closer to me, then a gap , then the other two subjects, then another clearer gap , then the rock on the hill would have been a better feature as my background. |
 |
f/22 1/250 ISO 3200
Wide DOF background in focus. I had to highlight in camera raw the shot was abit over exposed. Another shot where I could of had more separation with my subjects as I had Tamati as my background but really theres way to much going on in the background we have a corner of a house trees etc. If there wasn't so much clutter at the back this shot could have worked. |
 |
f/22 1/80 ISO 1250
Wide DOF background in focus. I have Kyle as my foreground then Damion then the house. Once again I think theres to much going on . I would rather of had Kyle sitting as he is , Damion perhaps more to the left with the Tree as the background. But I like the shot but I know what would have looked better. |
 |
f/22 1/160 ISO 1250
Wide DOF I like this set up but Damion should of pulled his pants up thats a little distracting. I have to much going on in the background again but I like how the boys are positioned. |
EXERCISE 4
ARCHITECTURE
Take some low angle photos with a wide DOF
I have a couple of photos from a photographer Kim Holtermand as an example of good low angle Architecture photos
...............................
MY EXAMPLES
 |
f/3.5 1/200 ISO 100
This shot is a wide DOF the stop doesn't suggest that but the pole isn't focused and the sky and leaves are very much in focus. The shutter speed could of been set to 60 or 80 . The ISO is correct, and I have a low vantage point. |
 |
f/5.6 1/200 ISO 100
Looking up at this building I was actually in the car taking this image. Low angle shot |
 |
f/5.6 1/1,250 ISO 100
Interesting image, once again taking the photo from the car. Low angle , wide DOF shutter speed high as we couldn't stop.
I had to straighten this image and highlighted it. |
 |
f/6.3 1/800 ISO 100
Wide DOF low angle , taking photo in the car . Everything in focus. |
 |
f/13 1/60 ISO 100
Wide DOF low angle the sky is in focus .
Taken in the Otara shopping centre. |
 |
| Add caption |
 |
f/9 1/1600 ISO 200
low angle, wide DOF. Everything is in focus |
 |
f/5.6 1/1250 ISO 100
I like this image , Queen street Auckland. I was hoping to get a narrow DOF but that didn't happen the background is focused. High shutter speed because I was in a car. |
 |
f/20 1/60 ISO 100
This shot was taken outside our Library , I found it to be quite interesting and unusual . I was looking up when taking the photo and was trying to get the whole building in . The whole image is in focus. |
 |
f/20 1/60 ISO 100
This I found interesting also outside our Library. A low angle, wide DOF and everything is in focus. |
This is
Take some low angle Architecture shots with a narrow DOF
 |
f/3.5 1/200 ISO 100
This is a good example of a low angle with a narrow depth of field. Focused in the closest part of the image then blur at the back. Shutter speed should of been set around 60 - 80. We took these images at Otara shopping centre. |
 |
f/5.6 1/1,250 ISO 100
Narrow DOF low angle almost front on but I was in the car . Taken in Auckland. |
 |
f/3.5 1/1250 ISO 100
Really didn't check the settings on my camera. Very high shutter speed even with the clouds moving it only needed to be 1/125 at the most. This isn't a narrow DOF as the clouds are really in focus and there is no blur. I thought about removing the image but I would like to keep it in here as a mistake , that I know I have made. |
 |
f/7.1 1/800 ISO 100
This shot is a low angle , narrow depth of field the mid ground of the sky tower is in focus but towards the top it becomes fuzzy. The sky isn't very detailed.
|
HIGH ANGLE ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOS WITH A WIDE DOF
I have some other examples of high angle shots with a wide DOF that I got off the web to help me learn more .
MY EXAMPLES
 |
f/4 1/3 ISO 400
A high angle shot , wide DOF, the fstop should of been higher but I still managed to get the whole picture in focus. |
 |
f/9 1/1600 ISO 200
High angle , wide DOF , everything in focus.
The picture looks quite under exposed wandering if that was because I was taking it from inside the the car. I perhaps should of reset my ISO to a higher setting. |
 |
f/22 1/50 ISO 100
wide DOF , high angle the background is in focus |
 |
f/7.1 1/125 ISO 100
This image has been cropped and auto focused / highlighted in camera raw.
Wide DOF, High angle architecture shot. |
 |
f/11 1/160 ISO 100
For the exercise I was focusing on the brown building in front here but I like the whole scene which is full of colourful Architecture , wide DOF and a high angle. I cropped this image in camera raw |
 |
f/11 1/160 ISO 100
My object in this image for my exercise was the little Dome building but I liked the whole photo which offers high angle wide DOF of a whole lot of different Architecture. I cropped this in camera raw and did some highlights / colour / exposure also in colour raw. |
TAKE SOME HIGH ANGLE ARCHITECTURE
PHOTOGRAPHS WITH NARROW DOF
 |
f/4 1/1600 ISO 100
Shutter speed to high, narrow DOF and a high angle. |
 |
f/4 1/1600 ISO 100
Shutter speed way to high high angle and narrow DOF, same shot as above just a different position. |
 |
f/4 1/60 ISO 400
Over exposed on the architecture I wanted to add to this image , high angle and narrow DOF |
 |
f/4 1/60 ISO 400
Over exposed , high angle, narrow DOF |
 |
f/4 1/400 ISO 100
High angle and narrow DOF . Looks crooked tho should have corrected this image. Shutter speed to high. |
 |
f/4 1/400 ISO 100
I like the architecture of the end part of the first house and the style of roofing on the next. Narrow DOF and high angle. |
 |
f/4 1/80 ISO 100
This isn't a high angle shot but I wanted to show the design . Narrow DOF |
 |
f/4 1/80 ISO 100
This is the high angle but it doesn't show the Architecture like I was trying to capture. So I added the top pic and bottom pic to show the detail more. Looking at this image it appears not to be straight. |
 |
f/4 1/400 ISO 100
I was trying to get this shot in at a higher angle but it failed so I am adding it anyway.
Shutter speed to high again just not checking my settings properly. Narrow DOF |
 |
f/11 1/200 ISO 400
The shutter speed is not right should of been 60/80 , high angle , narrow DOF . I think this is architecture. |
 |
f/11 1/160 ISO 200
High angle, narrow DOF architecture shot. |
 |
f/4 1/1600 ISO 100
The shutter speed is ridiculous anyway high angle , narrow DOF not sure if this is architecture a train track tho. |
EXERCISE 5
Take different photographs of leading lines. In this exercise I can see so much more in photos than I used too its amazing. Ive got a wide range of examples of leading lines in this exercise.
 |
f/32 15.0 ISO 100
My plant in this image has leading lines in the leaves themselves then the stem the leaves are coming off.
High angle shot. |
 |
f/25 1/250 ISO 800
I have a line of trees as the leading lines in this shot in the background. The ISO is ridiculous I must have forgotten to check it first. A big thing for me now is to check the camera first ! Low angle shot. |
 |
f/4 1.0 ISO 100
Narrow DOF leading you along the key board. |
 |
f/4.5 1/125 ISO 100
Wide DOF leading leading line the bridge going across and perhaps the pillars leading you down to the water or up ? |
 |
f/11 1/60 ISO 400
Bench table at MIT |
 |
f/4 1/250 ISO 100
I like this shot because we have leading lines on the chair and the floor. The image is slightly out of focus and was under exposed. I did some exposure changes and colour in camera raw |
 |
f/3.5 1/2500 ISO 100
Leading lines up the pole and then along the wires. This is a low angle shot. Wide DOF |
.
 |
f/5 1/500 ISO 100
This shot has leading lines going everywhere across, up down, then I have the men crossing, the road marking. The shot is abit over exposed. |
 |
f/4.5 1/60 ISO 100
I like this leading line draws you to the end like a tunnel effect. I have a narrow DOF . Its a pity I cut off the Policeman s face. |
 |
f/7.1 1/400 ISO 100
This shot leads you up the road. Wide DOF |
 |
f/22 1/10 ISO 100
. Good leading lines almost taking you to a point. |
 |
f/4.5 1/400 ISO 100
This image you are drawn to the car by following the train track. The leading lines lead you and if you look further into the background there is another leading line.. the hedge.. Also we have foreground the tracks, mid ground the car and then the background the hedge. |
 |
f/5.6 1/100 ISO 100
This reminds me of kids holding hands. |
 |
f/5.6 1/125 ISO 100
This leading line leads you up the road and around the corner. |
 |
f/16 1/60 ISO 100
Takin in the Otara shopping centre I like this example of leading lines. Narrow DOF |
 |
f/22 1/10 ISO 100
Valley School leads you into a triangle. |
 |
f/5.6 1/250 ISO 100
This shot almost has a 3d effect , this can lead you up the road or the arrows can lead you down |
 |
f/11 1/10 ISO 800
In this shot your eyes follow the lights right to the end of the building and out. |
 |
f/22 1/100 ISO 100
These are seats at the racetrack , you get lead two ways in this photo across and up. |
I have here some examples for myself and to share.
An example of Narrow DOF Example of wide DOF
And other examples : of Narrow DOF
By Mike Panic Photography.
When I first started to take photography seriously over 10 years ago, mastering depth of field was high on my priority list. Shooting with a narrow depth of field involves setting your camera lens to the widest possible setting and then focusing on one particular part of the frame. The stark contrast between in and out of focus portions of the frame concentrating around the subject and relative distance to other things in the frame creates a wonderful, visually appealing, texture enriched image. In my mind, being able to properly produce a shot with the right depth of field makes the difference between a snapshot and a photograph. Here’s 17 excellent examples of narrow depth of field to give you some inspiration.
