IN CLASS EXERCISES....
Thinking about compositional techniques we have learnt when framing the following photographs.
In each of the images I should incorporate one or more of the following : vantage point ; leading lines , foreground and background, cropping , line and pattern, contrasting or complementary colour.
Exercise 1
Take a photo in direct light using shadow to frame your subject..
![]() |
| f/4.5 1/500 ISO 100 Tracey standing with the sun overhead. We had shade from the tree |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/320 ISO 100 We only have highlighted hair as her body is in the shade , the sun is behind her creating this effect. |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/250 ISO 100 Stephanie posing for the direct sunlight which is behind her as you can see the shadow in front of her. |
Take a photo with your subjects back to the sun without reflector.
![]() |
| f/4.5 1/640 ISO 100 Stephanie standing with her back to the suns you can see with her shadow. Her hair is still highlighted beautifully. |
Take the same shot again introducing the reflector
.
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/400 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/250 ISO 100 This was to strong for Stephanies eyes but we get to see the effect of a reflector close up and the effect it has. |
![]() |
| f/4.5 1/400 ISO 100 A diagram of how Tracey was holding the reflector. She wasn't standing right in Stephanies face she had stepped back a few steps and the effect is amazing. |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/320 ISO 100 As Tatiana has turned her face you can see the effect of the reflector on the side of her face and under her chin. |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/320 ISO 100 Tatiana has a lovely golden glow on her face. This light is much more subtle than the direct sunlight. |
Take a photo ( portrait or still life ) using direct light.
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/500 ISO 100 |
Take this photo again using a reflector to soften the shadows.
Take a few photos experimenting with the white reflector, gold and silver reflector
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/500 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/500 ISO 100 Look at this effect a golden glow and nice shadow.. If I didn't know what was going on in this image I would think there was a fire lit near to the object. |
![]() |
| f/36 1/15 ISO 100 Im trying to get as close to the ground as possible here , its bit hard because of my hips so I just put the camera down on the grass and took it. This is a low angle |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/500 ISO 100 High angle shot you can really see the shadows |
Take a portrait using diffused light ( either in an area of shadow or on a cloudy day )
Because our day wasn't cloudy we decided to go to the container and stand next to it because the girls were totally shaded by it.
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/40 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/40 ISO 100 Tatiana standing in the shade |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/320 ISO 100 With Tracey because the sun had moved more we decided to do a split image of shadow and sun |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/200 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/800 ISO 100 The sun had totally moved so we had no more shadow so Stephaine and Raemon had direct sunlight. |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/400 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/320 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/400 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/100 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/320 ISO 100 Now look at this we have a Rembrandt image here and we didn't know. We achieved this with natural lighting |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/100 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/100 ISO 100 This was the white reflector still very bright the look is over exposed. |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/100 ISO 100 This is way to bright but it does give an indication of how bright it can be and the effect it can have on the subject. We used the gold reflector in this exercise. |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/800 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/800 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/320 ISO 100. I like this image because the shadow rolls around Traceys face . White reflector and Raemons holding it quite close to her. |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/100 ISO 100 This has the golden glow , as a group we liked that reflector because it gave off the golden glow . This image .is slightly out of focus , hand shake |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/500 ISO 100 |
![]() |
| f/5.6 1/320 ISO 100 We were observing the shadow on Traceys face |
We certainly got some really good examples of shadow and diffused light , direct light and rejected light.
Really enjoyed this exercise...
